An original oil painting can remain in perfect conditions by countless years for our enjoyment with some simple and basic care. The first thing to keep in mind are the risks of damage that can suffer the painting. Most of the damage occur while transporting the painting. If your painting is framed you should hold it by both sides, not from the wire. Always use strong packaging to avoid damages.
To choose the perfect spot to hang a painting we will keep in mind various factors, the most important factor will be the light. It is not convenient to locate it in places where the painting receives direct sunlight since gradually this will alter the colors of the oil. On the other hand dark places will overshadow the oil. Look for a wall with good lighting but protected from the sun. Artificial lights are recommended buy not to close to the painting or they will also alter the colors of the oils.
The extreme temperatures also can cause damages to the painting. If you are thinking to place the painting just above the fireplace be sure to check how warm does it get. The humidity also is a major factor to keep in mind, avoid keeping the paintings storaged in basements or humid places.
It is convenient to clean the dust of the surface of the painting regularly. It is not advisable to situate the painting near fireplaces, not only because of the temperature factor, think of the amount of ashes and dust that will be sticking to the canvas. To clean the dust of the surface of the canvas and the framework, use a smooth hair brush, and sweep the dust gently. Do not agitate the painting to remove the dust by any circumstance. The back of the painting should be cleaned with a vacuum, with a lot of care and avoiding to touch the canvas aspired the dust. NEVER wet a painting for cleaning. If you find a stain in the canvas you can use a tiny ball of cotton barely soaked in distilled water, rotate gently to remove the stain.
The insects also can cause damage to the painting. Generally they are located in the rear area of the canvas looking for dark places. If you see signs of insects as larvae, holes in the wood, sawdust, etc, isolate the painting of the others and contact a proffesional.
