Pastel Paintings Care and Conservation
To preserve a pastel paintings try to avoid the use of fixative because they might overshadow the colors. If you must use fixative place the painting on the floor and spray from above allowing the spray to fall gently.
Framing is fundamental to preserve the integrity of a pastel painting, since they cannot be touched neither cleaned with brushes as we would normally do with an oil paintng. Frame it with glass to avoid damages caused by humidity, dust, insects, ultraviolet light, etc.
If you are planning to frame it yourself keep in mind that you will need to leave a space between the glass and the painting to avoid contact. Tape the back of the painting to the back of the passpartou on the upper side, use acid free adhesive tape, this way the painting remains hanging freely, you can add tape in the lower part of the painting to avoid movement. Never glue the totality of the painting on a hard surface because in time this action will ruin your artwork.
If you need to trasnport your pastel painting do not place it facing downward because particles of pastel dust will fall to the glass. If this happens you should remove the frame and clean the glass.
